chapter one: waiting for perfect

for a long time, i thought my life would begin later. not consciously. i wasn't sitting around waiting for permission. at least that's what i told myself. but looking back, i realise how many conditions i attached to my happiness. i'll be confident when. i'll be happy when. i'll finally start when. there was always a "when". i thought i needed the dream house before i could truly enjoy life. i thought i needed flawless skin before i could show up confidently on camera. before launching a brand. before putting myself out there. before allowing myself to be seen. it sounds ridiculous when i write it down. and yet i know i'm not the only one. because most of us are waiting for something. more money. more confidence. more certainty. more time. a different body. a different face. a different version of ourselves. we convince ourselves that happiness is waiting somewhere on the other side of improvement. and so we wait. and wait. and wait.

the funny thing is that life doesn't. life keeps moving. whether you're ready or not. whether your skin is clear or not. whether your plans worked out or not. whether you finally feel confident or not. life simply continues. i remember thinking that one day i would wake up and finally become the version of myself i had imagined. the woman with the confidence. the certainty. the perfect timing. the flawless skin. the dream house. the answers. instead, i wake up some mornings and discover not one pimple but an entire committee meeting happening on my face. sometimes i still doubt myself. sometimes i still overthink. sometimes i still feel afraid. and do you know what surprised me most? none of those things stopped mattering. because i started anyway. the shop launched anyway. the photos got taken anyway. the camera turned on anyway. life happened anyway. thank god for photoshop. but also thank god for perspective. because somewhere along the way, i realised something important. the goal was never perfection. the goal was participation. all those years, i thought i was protecting myself from disappointment. what i was actually doing was postponing joy. i was waiting to earn experiences i was already allowed to have. waiting to become someone i thought was more deserving. more polished. more ready. more enough.

but enough is a moving target. you reach one milestone and immediately create another. you get the house. now it needs something else. you improve one insecurity. another appears. you accomplish a goal. a new one takes its place. the finish line keeps moving because life keeps moving. which means if happiness depends on finally arriving, you may spend your entire life chasing it. that thought changed me. because when i look back now, the moments i'm proudest of didn't happen when i felt ready. they happened when i moved anyway. afraid. uncertain. imperfect. human.

and maybe that's what courage actually is. not believing you have become fearless. not finally loving every part of yourself. not reaching some mythical level of perfection. maybe courage is simply deciding that your life deserves to begin before perfection arrives. because perfection is late. it always has been. and honestly? i'm done waiting for her. the life i was waiting to start had already started without me. thankfully, i eventually decided to join it.
